What to Wear to a Photoshoot? A Photographer’s Guide to Picture-Perfect Style

Stepping in front of the camera can feel exciting – and a little nerve-wracking. One of the most common questions we get at Extra Moments Photography is: “What should we wear?”

The truth is, the right outfit can elevate your photos from good to timeless. Whether it’s a family session at the beach, a romantic couple’s shoot, or a celebration of motherhood, here’s how to dress to feel confident and look your best.

1. Start with Neutrals and Soft Tones

Think ivory, blush, beige, soft blues, sage green, or earthy browns. These tones photograph beautifully in natural light and allow your expressions and emotions to shine through. Avoid overly saturated or neon colours – they can clash with natural backdrops and cast unwanted colour on your skin.

💡 Pro Tip: Dress in harmony, not uniform. Matching exactly isn’t necessary – instead, coordinate your outfits in a similar colour palette.

2. Choose Comfort Over Trends

Your photoshoot is about capturing you – your connection, laughter, and joy. If you’re adjusting a tight dress or uncomfortable shoes every few minutes, it will show. Choose outfits that you feel good moving in. Flowing dresses, relaxed linens, well-fitted shirts, and comfy pants are always a win.

3. Texture > Logos

Subtle textures like knits, linen, cotton, and lace add depth to images. On the other hand, bold logos, characters, or heavy branding can distract from the moment – so we recommend leaving them out.

4. Layers and Accessories Can Elevate the Look

A scarf, hat, or textured jacket can add dimension to your images. For kids, overalls or suspenders can be adorable. Just keep it simple – one or two key accessories are enough.

5. Barefoot is Beautiful

Especially for beach or garden shoots – barefoot is not only natural but helps ground you in the moment. It gives the image a relaxed, editorial feel. We’ll always guide you based on the location.

6. Plan Ahead for Little Ones

Bring a backup outfit for babies or toddlers (just in case!). Avoid busy patterns or characters – timeless over trendy always wins.

Extra Moments Client Style Tips:

  • Avoid all-black or all-white outfits. They can be tricky in sunlight and lose detail in editing.
  • Iron your outfits ahead of time – wrinkles are tough to fix post-shoot.
  • Consider the backdrop. We’ll help you choose, but if we’re shooting in nature, aim to complement it rather than match it.

Still Unsure? We’ve Got You.
