How to Prepare Kids for a Family Photoshoot
At Extra Moments Photography, some of the most heartwarming sessions come from family shoots filled with giggles, cuddles, and spontaneous moments. But let’s be honest — if you’re bringing young kids to a shoot, you’re probably also packing snacks, backup outfits, and a silent prayer that everything goes smoothly!
Here’s the good news: it can be a relaxed, joyful experience — with just a little preparation. These simple tips will help set your kids up for success and help us capture the beautiful, natural moments you’ll treasure forever.
1. Set Expectations Early (But Keep it Light)
Kids do better when they know what’s coming. Let them know they’re going to meet a new friend (that’s me!) who will take some fun photos. Keep the vibe positive and light — no pressure, just play.
Tip: Try something like, “We’re going to have a little adventure and take some fun photos with Jane. There might be tickles!”
2. Time it Right
Plan the shoot around your child’s happiest time of day — usually after a nap and snack. A well-rested, well-fed child is more likely to be engaged and cooperative.
3. Dress for Comfort and Confidence
Choose outfits that are soft, breathable, and easy to move in. Avoid anything itchy, stiff, or too tight. Neutral tones photograph beautifully, and it’s always a good idea to bring a backup outfit — or two.
4. Bring Snacks and Water
Pack easy, mess-free snacks like plain crackers, rice cakes, or fruit slices (nothing sticky or brightly coloured, please!). And don’t forget water — staying hydrated makes a big difference.
5. Pack a Comfort Item
A favourite toy, blanket, or book can help younger kids feel safe and relaxed. Sometimes these little treasures even sneak into the photos — and that’s part of your family’s story.
6. Let Go of Perfection
The most memorable family photos are the real ones — the laughter, the wild cuddles, the mid-giggle eye contact. If your child gets a little silly or restless, don’t stress. We’ll follow their lead, adapt, and keep the session playful and low-pressure.
